I've submitted several more ... erm, for the lack of a better term ... "artistic" photographs of my Szayel costume, so here's some basic ones showing off the costume. (The image is long, I'm sorry.) HMM I need to stand straighter for this character - I only thought about that sometimes...
Here's some info:
Hakama: Made by me using a pattern bought from here: [link] I had to shorten them considerably (since I decided to do this version of his outfit, despite the fact that Kubo completely changes the design within the same fight), and I also didn't follow the instructions exactly. I left some things out. xD
They're made of a rayon/polyester blend, fully lined, and were starched pretty heavily. @___@
Shirt: I heavily altered a women's oriental jacket pattern - I chose to do this because I wanted to get attach the sleeves in a specific manner and I had no idea how to do so! I used Simplicity's 6519 pattern: [link]
As you can see, My shirt looks a bit different than those jackets. xD That's the result of making a mock-up with the pattern (oh the alterations, they took forever!) and then using the mock-up as a pattern for the actual shirt, haha.
The shirt was made of the same material as the hakama and is also fully lined - I used single fold bias tape for the lines on the shirt (WAY TO USE IT FOR THE WRONG PURPOSE!) and double-fold bias tape for the piping.
"Under"-pants: Made of the same rayon/poly blend, which was probably a bad mistake. Since I have calf muscles of DOOM, I couldn't make them as tight-fitting as they should be at the bottom otherwise I couldn't put my boots on underneath. I used velcro on the bottom so I could close them under the boots, but as you can see, they got totally torn up and I probably should've made them differently. xD
Boots: Bought, and used electrical tape to put on the white lines. HEY ALRIGHT.
Gloves: Bought (in Japan, for only like 150 yen!), and then I sewed the lines into them.
Wig: Bought (from cosplay_wig on eBay), and styled. I'm actually really frustrated because I wanted to try to get his natural(ly weird) hair line, but I found out too late that the skin part wasn't where I thought it was. So I had to make due with the clips (which were hand-painted).
Glasses: I WOULD LIKE TO REMAKE THEM but these were made out of craft foam (which was painted, painted, sanded, & coated) since my sculpey ones broke the night before. :/
Fornicaras: OH SHAME. My attempts at foam prop making went downhill and I was running out of time, so I purchased a wooden bokken (with sheath) online. I did a lot of spray-painting and I had to saw off the guard, then attached my own (which is made of a lot of styrofoam, sculpy, and paper mache!). My sash is a basic broadcloth.
I think I covered everything. @_@; If anyone has any questions about it, feel free to ask!
WOW!!!!! a dead on cosplay of Szayel this seriously awsume as hell i always figured a woman had a better chance at cosplaying him more than a guy since most guys bodies are not as efeminate as his was
Your glasses really are awesome!! May a frustrated fellow Szayel cosplayer ask you how you made them? *___* And the purple thingy that holds the sheath? I'm thinking about using a thick rope but to find a purple one is next to impossible... I don't know if ropes can be painted...
Thank you! I actually made a second pair, which turned out more successful (see leftmost pic): [link]
The original pair I made with craft foam, actually. (I tried making them of sculpy but they snapped the night before the con!) I traced out the shape and cut it carefully. I used the kind with paper backing, which made it stronger. I then coated it with a few layers of gesso, some actual paint to give it dimension, and several coats of clear sealant. They weren't very sturdy on my face but because I had them tucked into my wig, it worked pretty okay.
I thought they were too clunky though, so I made a second pair out of model magic (which I unfortunately have to make again, since they broke in my bag at a restaurant!). Despite them breaking, they were pretty sturdy once it dried. I carefully sanded them (primarily where the curving is on the frames) and painted them.
To hold them together, I made notches for the front to sit in the ear-frames (in the first pair). In the second pair, I stuck small straight pins through the top and bottom of the frame and into the ear part. Kinda tricky.
I just used purple fabric and bunched it up using elastic.
Huuum...I don't have too many suggestions, but I did use an altered shirt pattern (it was similar to a Chinese style shirt) to create the top. [link] - This pattern is great for hakama, too.

I painted and modified it (particularly, I made the guard and replaced the one already on the sword).
Thanks a bunch!

I'll be sure to let you know how it goes, shall I?
